About this deal

The book consists of autobiographical parts while it simultaneously tries to be a guide to autistic people. I love these types of books as I was diagnosed with autism as an adult not so long ago and find them very helpful. this book existing is such a gift and makes me so happy to be alive in a time where i have the honor and opportunity to read it. Unfortunately, there is a lack of materials within the autistic and neurodivergent community that are actually written and from the perspective of actually autistic and neurodivergent people! It was so perfectly written and I would recommend this to anyone, it has a very casual vibe which makes it super accessible to all ages and was engaging and informative.

Even though she mentions that she also has ADHD there is rarely any mention of other neurodivergencies and I feel like we’re washing away the meaning of the word Neurodivergence by over-using it instead of stating the exact condition we’re talking about (here: autism).Eye-opening and very heartfelt, this was a great listen that I highly recommend to anyone wanting to better understand the diversity of neurodivergent minds/experiences! I’ve been looking for books about neurodivergence written by neurodivergent authors and this has been a great place to start. I've even had friends of mine watch her videos and TikToks of her openly stimming while seeing sharks and say things like "I'm not saying that you two are the same person, I'm just saying we haven't ever seen the two of you in the same room. I didn't learn anything new myself about autism and ADHD as I have read and learned a lot about it in the past couple of years, but the book would be a great introduction for a young person who is just starting to learn about it.

That's not me shaming anyone for what they love - I just *don't* relate to the genie from Aladdin in a very significant way, nor do I necessarily agree that Rafiki in The Lion King is coded as having ADHD. With more and more people identifying with autism, ADHD, OCD, mental health challenges and other forms of neurodivergence, it’s time to celebrate – not stigmatise – the beauty of difference. I just finished listening to this and, whilst it was an enjoyable enough listen - this might be the most Gen-Z book I've ever engaged with.Ableism is so ingrained in society and this book is here to challenge all those attitudes that people hold about us, even the ones that are so deeply embedded that we internalise the idea that we are less than. highly recommend to all people, but especially to anyone who is on the spectrum themselves, loves and cares for anyone on the spectrum, or just wants to educate themselves better on autistic people. Reading that small, blink-and-you'll-miss-it excerpt gave me a quite frankly dangerous amount of hope.
