About this deal

It has an amazingly complex aroma with spicy notes of citronella, ginger, cardamom, peppermint tea, and lavender. Basil is honestly one of the better substitutes because it tastes almost the exact same as your tarragon, minus the licorice flavor.

Tarragon is a unique herb that’s bitter, slightly sweet, with notes of licorice, anise, pepper, and mint. It is used abundantly in French dishes, in delicate vegetable, seafood, and poultry recipes, and rich, creamy sauces. Loss of appetite can occur for various reasons, such as age, depression or chemotherapy. If left untreated, it can lead to malnutrition and a decreased quality of life ( 20, 21). If you are familiar with mint, the tarragon flavor should be familiar to your palate, as it falls into the same family. You’ll find that Angelica tastes pretty similar to fennel and dill, but it isn’t used nearly as much because it’s harder to find in most grocery stores. After receiving tarragon extract for 21 days, the mice showed significantly decreased levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. They also had increased macrophage activity. Macrophages are cells that are important for immunity and tissue growth. 6. Fighting cancer Sometimes you may need to compensate by letting go of the licorice taste or losing some of that sweetness. Fresh basil works wonderfully in place of fresh tarragon, though dried basil is a little bit weaker and requires a bit more when replacing dried tarragon. The beautiful thing about basil is how well it stands up against more robust flavors.

Measurement guidance: Replace 1 tablespoon of fresh tarragon with 1 tablespoon of fresh parsley. 10. Cilantro We would advise going for dried rosemary to replace tarragon, but the fresh branches will do as well. And they’re quite alike in terms of appearance. 8. Basil

Tarragon combines sweet and minty, warming and cooling effects. From vanilla to mint, from pepper to eucalyptus vibes, tarragon is quite complex. Not only is anise strong in licorice flavor but it also has a touch of sweet and spicy mix going on. This makes it perfect for subbing in for dried or fresh tarragon. Air drying is the easiest way to dry herbs like tarragon. The simplest way to air dry the herb will be to tie the stems together in a bundle with some twine and hang them with the leaves down and the cut stems up. The ideal spot will be dark and have dry, moving air. If the air is not moving, the herb can take a long time to dry and mold can become an issue. The temperature should be warm but not too warm since excessive heat can diminish flavor. Why it works: With subtle licorice flavor in its dried form, basil works well in cooked applications.

Dill weed is an excellent substitute for tarragon if you don’t like that hint of licorice present in tarragon’s flavor. If you don’t appreciate that slight licorice taste tarragon gives off, you should consider putting dill in its place.

An imbalance in the hormones ghrelin and leptin may also cause a decrease in appetite. These hormones are important for energy balance. Dried tarragon can leave a bitter flavor when used in large amounts! To avoid this when using dried herbs, try one of my other tarragon substitutes below. Fresh tarragon is typically only available in the spring and summer in cooler climates. It’s not as readily available as other herbs, such as cilantro, so you may only find it at large chain grocery stores or farmers markets. Summary As a general rule, a tablespoon of fresh tarragon can be replaced in a 1:1 ratio with a tablespoon of fresh fennel leaves.
