In Kinect: Disneyland Adventures, Prince Eric is mentioned by Ariel: "Oh, I can't wait to dance with Eric. He's so handsome." Like I said, this was mostly nothing new but that doesn't mean it wasn't satisfying as a read/retelling. I actually quite enjoyed everything and I'm only putting it at 4 stars because it follows SO closely to the movie that it didn't feel like it was very original a few times. The new twists and characters we meet make this worth reading though. I actually wish they'd pushed those into the movie because I loved seeing Eric like this.

In the original Little Mermaid fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen, the Prince is nameless and his love for the mermaid was strictly platonic. He also makes an appearance riding Steamboat Willie during the show's finale. The prequel television series is set before the events of the 1989 film and focuses almost entirely on Ariel. However, Eric makes very brief cameo appearances in three episodes. Preserving the continuity where Eric and Ariel only first met in the original film, the two never met each other in the television series, despite appearing side-by-side. Expert Rider: Eric is a highly skilled rider. He can ride horses and command the reigns of a carriage controlled by his horse with relative ease. What I loved most though, was seeing even more of Eric’s kind and compassionate nature shine through. He was my favorite Disney prince because of how kind he was to Ariel, even though she couldn’t talk. One character, Gabriella, is a lesbian, while another character, Sauer, uses they/them pronouns. Both Gabriella’s sexuality and Sauer’s pronouns are no big deal. Here she says she spends her days at Disney's Hollywood Studios very lonely for they keep Eric at Magic Kingdom, in the current show at Cinderella Castle. Disney has done some questionable things in the past, but this book is fortunately not one of them. I loved reading Eric's point of view, it is fascinating, and it gives him this beautiful, complex character arc while keeping the same kindness and cheerfulness he has in the original Disney story. I especially love it so much because I see it as canon. It isn't a retelling or some fun addition that doesn't necessarily have to follow the original. On the contrary, the majority of the book is largely based on the movie, with most of the scenes and lines taken directly from it. Besides, even the additional scenes that aren't in the movie directly correlate with it. There are some changes but nothing unappealing. Additionally, the plot is fantastic, and there is so much more world-building and exposition.

So the problem I ran into with this book isn't the story itself. If I had never seen Little Mermaid or only had a middling opinion of it, this would probably be a 5-star read for me, definitely a full 4 stars. It just didn't work for me, because the entire time, I kept going, "There's nothing in the movie to support this!" Nora: Captain Sauer's second-in-command. She never knew she was the child of a human and a mermaid. The Little Mermaid has been my favorite Disney movie since before I even remember watching movies. Naturally, that makes Prince Eric my favorite prince. I also joke that I suffer from "Prince Eric Syndrome", meaning the combination of blue eyes + dark hair is 100% my type. I married that type, so it must be true. Eric appears as one of the guests in the 2001-2003 animated television series House of Mouse, usually sitting next to Ariel. His notable appearance is in the episode " Goofy's Valentine Date", wherein that episode Ariel was seen staring affectionately at him. In the same scene, Goofy reads out the valentine specials on the menu, sobbing away his misery for not having Valentine's Day date.I felt like the author genuinely loved and understood the plot of The Little Mermaid. She loved Eric and Ariel, and built upon their stories in a way that was engaging and still held true to the original characters.
