About this deal

Anche questo libro non fa eccezione: si tratta della storia di una gravidanza di una ragazzina di 14 anni, in seguito a violenza, che viene quindi portata in una struttura per ragazze madri. Laura often stays for dinner at the Bertrams which is full of laughter, plenty of food fit for a restaurant, and a delicious pudding for afters.

Tall, Dark, and Handsome: Leon and Daniel are described as being this way, Laura seems to have a type. Jacqueline Wilson undoubtedly has a talent for writing from the point of view of children/teenagers. Abusive Parents: Laura's mother slaps her a couple of times, even if she's immediately apologetic about it. Embarrassing Damp Sheets: Happens quite often at Heathcote House whenever a girl's water breaks during the night.Sibling Yin-Yang: Laura's mother Kathleen and her much younger sister Susannah are polar opposites which appears to be why their relationship is so strained, with Laura's mother being very traditional and having a negative attitude towards anything seen as too "modern" or non-traditional, such as fashion, styles, lifestyles etc, which is why she dislikes Susannah so much, because unlike her she is very modern and trendy in every way, and while realising it isn't ideal, Susannah does not at all condemn Laura for having a baby so young out of wedlock. It horrified me to think that no one had ever spoken to her about sex, even getting her period was a very short-lived conversation. Wilson very much embeds the attitudes of the ‘60s into the story- the lack of awareness and morality amongst some of the characters regarding sexual consent, and victim blaming. It is frightful to read, but in my opinion, it is crucial we do, to enable our society to never revert to such appalling attitudes to teenage pregnancy and sexual consent.

Baby Love by Jacqueline Wilson | Waterstones

I have always been her biggest fan, and every time I read a new book of her’s, I am once again reminded as to why. They don't visit her and then say that she can only come home if she gives her daughter up for adoption. I have so many positive memories of reading her books as a child (and even rereading them as an adult) and I’m so excited to read a book set for young adults and one of a more adult and sensitive subject too.

The first half of the story allows us to get to know Laura with all her dreams, worries and imaginings. Laura herself also notes that while she got a happy ending, the other girls at Heathcote House didn't because they had to give up their babies with no chance of ever being reunited with them. One of Jacqueline’s most successful and enduring creations has been the famous Tracy Beaker, who first appeared in 1991 in The Story of Tracy Beaker. She has written over 100 books and is the creator of characters such as Tracy Beaker and Hetty Feather.
