About this deal

Finally got around to listening to this album on vinyl, and I was quite happy with side one as surface noise is almost non-existent, but I did have to turn up my preamp to get to a decent volume. Coming from Cocker, who made secondhand clothes and music glamorous, the song is undeniably affecting and exciting, much like Different Class itself”.

Over its 40 years in business, PIAS has grown to be one of the largest independently-owned music groups in the world, carving out its own in-house recorded music division PIAS [Recordings]. When Pulp released Different Class in October 1995, it was at the peak of the Britpop era – less a cultural movement and more a label the music press had slapped on a collection of disparate (though mostly white, guitar-based) British bands infiltrating the charts in the mid-90s. On Pulp’s ’90s records, there are usually a couple of examples of full-blown pastiche per album, like the Moroder-esque Eurodisco of “She’s a Lady” on His ‘N’ Hers. Common People,” for instance, used all 48 studio tracks available, working in odd cheapo synth textures like the Stylophone and a last-minute overlay of acoustic guitar that, according to producer Chris Thomas, was “compressing so much, it just sunk it into the track. The mix is weirdly balanced without some body to deliver these awesome songs, the volume too low, no bass, no audible impact during the transitions in a song like 'Common People'. The album explores sex and class with Jarvis Cocker's biting, witty lyrics taking a perfect snapshot of mid 90s English suburban and working class life. What started as a celebration of the British music industry reasserting its influence after a few years dominated by the US grunge scene had morphed into something of a media bandwagon. APERTURE COVER; Cover still looks good despite having some shelf wear; a dented top edge and a couple tears on the front cover. Will show some signs that it was played and otherwise handled by a previous owner who took good care of it. What makes Cocker's brand of crooning wordsmithery so important to the genre is that he really captured the ennui and frustration of middle-class youth. Different Class absolutely BEGS to be pressed across 2xLPs as it is way too long to sound any good on a single LP.

Pulp don't stray from their signature formula at all - it's still grandly theatrical, synth-spiked, kitchen-drama pop with new wave and disco flourishes, but they have mastered it here. A brilliant album and one that not only captured Pulp at their absolute peak but is also one of the most important recordings ever submitted to wax in British music history. Everyone already said everything about the pressing itself so I have nothing else to add about that.now hooked on bands I’d never heard of let alone exploring some different sounds outside my Laneway. If you become obsessed with source origin over actual sound/pressing quality and cant accept a digital step or digital recording being pressed onto the vinyl medium you have entered the realm of vinyl snobbery and arent able to actually the music for what it is. Now with a massively successful US tour opening for sweet soul darlings Thee Sacred Souls behind him, 2023 is sure to be a propitious year for Daptone's newest signee. The seediness, the wink and nudge as well as the many references to taste, society and above all class make this album an essential social document of sorts and as a consequence it could be argued that their legacy is every bit as important in defining Englishness as are groups like Fairport Convention, Pentangle et al.

There is something ever-fresh and stunning regarding Cocker’s songwriting, and Pulp are at their strongest on Different Class.

Island/UMC did a really nice deluxe 25th version of His N' Hers in 2019, white vinyl, Abbey Road mastering, sounded great. From the faux-show tune romp of the anthemic opener "Mis-Shapes" and the glitzy, gaudy stomp of "Disco 2000" (complete with a nicked riff from Laura Branigan's "Gloria") to the aching ballad "Underwear" and the startling sexual menace of "I Spy," Pulp construct a diverse, appealing album around the same basic sound.
